Fragment of the propeller of the aircraft ‘Southern Cross’. It was collected by Victor Piper (born in 1918), who followed the achievements of Charles Kingsford Smith and developed a passion for aviation from a young age. After its donation to the National Museum, the fragment was taken into space by Australian-born astronaut Andy Thomas on board the STS-102 Discovery (March 8-21, 2001), the eighth Shuttle mission to visit the International Space Station.
